Cartridge filters are defined as fabric or polymer-based filters designed primarily to remove particulate material from fluids. They are usually rigid or semi-rigid and manufactured by affixing the fabric or polymer to a central core. Cartridge filters are disposable and easily replaceable.
Cartridge filters are typically housed in a pressure vessel and can be used either individually or as an array of cartridges in a vessel. Fluids usually flow from the outside of the filter to the inside.
Filtration is the process of passing water through material to remove particulate and other impurities, including floc, from the water being treated. These impurities consist of suspended particles (fine silts and clays), biological matter (bacteria, plankton, spores, cysts or other matter) and floc. The material used in filters for public water supply is normally a bed of sand, coal, or other granular substance.
Sand/Media filters use a filtration bed consisting of one layer of gravel, one layer of sand (may be used more than one size range) and one layer of green sand. The layers have the ability to remove suspended particulates via a number of different filtration mechanisms.
